A small amount of phosphorus is removed via uptake through the plants’ roots. More phosphorus settles to the bottom of the ponds and binds to the clay soil. NTS facilities are estimated to remove on average one quarter of the total phosphorus loads and keep them from reaching Upper Newport Bay.
